Duo told to gun down main riva

CONSISTENCY against the world's top pairs will be the objective of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong as national doubles coach Rosman Razak feels that is the only way his top combination will have genuine chances of winning major events this year.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong, the World No 1, have been winning titles regularly over the last six months but their performances against World No 2 Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae of South Korea, World No 3 Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia and China's two-time world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng have not Fendi Replica Handbags been encouraging at all.

Rosman regards the three pairs as the Malaysian duo's main worry in the World Championships in Paris on Aug 23-29 and the Guangzhou Asian Games on Nov 13-21 and this is the reason they must beat them consistently.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong will be aiming to reclaim the Malaysia Open title they last won in 2007 but Rosman is not putting too much emphasis on that goal as the focus will be on the major events later this year.

They are the Thomas Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur on May 9-16, World Championships catalog printing in Paris on Aug 23-29, Commonwealth Games in New Delhi on Oct 3-14 and the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Nov 13-21.

The Malaysian Open starts today at the Putra Stadium.

"Kien Keat-Boon Heong may win the Malaysia Open but it will become meaningless if they lose in the World Championships.

"They must start beating their three main rivals consistently and only this will give them the chance to excel in the major events," said Rosman.

"This doesn't mean we are taking the Malaysia Open lightly. Our pairs will be giving their best and it will be a boost if they can win.

"We have not been getting consistent results against Markis- Hendra, Jae Sung-Yong Dae and Cai Yun-Haifeng and whenever our pairs falter, one of the three pairs end up winning.

"There is little to separate the four pairs and any pair can go on to win any event but Kien Keat-Boon Heong should start gaining the advantage over their rivals as it will give them an edge in the majors later this year."

As for Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari, Rosman feels the Malaysia Open will be crucial for them as they need to overcome their recent poor form as soon as possible.

Zakry-Fairuz have a tough opening match against Tony Gunawan- Howard Bach but if they overcome the pair from the US, they should have a clear path until the semi-finals where they are expected to meet Jae Sung-Yong Dae, who won the Korea Open on Sunday.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong's chances of winning the Malaysia Open crown have been boosted by the withdrawal of Markis-Hendra, and this will most likely pit them against Jae Sung-Yong Dae in the final.

Jae Sung-Yong Dae are one of their bogey pairs and Kien Keat- Boon Heong can deliver what Rosman wants by beating the Koreans and start the year on a winning note.
