Violinist relishes opportunity

HAVING started lessons when he was 4, renowned 28-year-old violinist Feng Ning learned the importance of teacher- pupil relationships early on in life.

Which is why he's relishing the chance to teach, mentor and critique at the Queenstown Violin Summer School this year.

Ning found prominence early, and by 13 the prodigy from Chengdu, in China, was attending master classes in London.

By 16 he had earned a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music , also in London.

That began a career path that would go on to read like a "how- to" manual in becoming a much uttered name in classical music.

The opportunity to help the talented young students who made it to the violin school improve is a task he's clearly passionate about.

"I've had some great teachers, and now that I'm doing it I find there's no real dividing line between teaching and learning," he said.

"Teaching makes you explain music to a pupil. Explaining it clearly helps you define in your own mind what a certain piece of music is, and this helps you understand the different ways it can be played or interpreted."

After studying, Ning placed several prestigious international competitions, but his first win came from a source closer to home when he won the 2005 Michael Hill International Violin Competition.

"To be able to win what was then becoming a well established competition was great. Now it's a very big competition and it was an honour to be part of it in what was only its third year."

Winning major competitions was something that became a pattern for Ning, and led a career highlight.

In 2006 he won the Paganini Competition.

Held in honour of the 19th

"Getting the opportunity to play the Cannone was very, very, special. It's the only violin Paganini kept until his death, and was built in 1743.

"Something about this one violin sang to this incredible musician and the chance to play that same instrument was a huge honour."

But Ning plans on turning his past competitive streak full circle next year.

"I've started judging. It can be a very hard task, but I'm hoping that next year I'll be back . . . but this time as a judge."
